![]() English Language Opportunities for Scholars and Spouses.Community, Academic, and Cultural Resources and Training.Uber has called the proposed ordinance “the most restrictive in the country.”Ĭedar Rapids Mayor Ron Corbett and Jasmine Almoayed, the city’s economic development liaison, said Thursday the city is enthused by Uber’s arrival and the new transportation business model that Uber is bringing to Cedar Rapids and cities across the country.Īlmoayed said the city still is weeks away from a new city ordinance to address Uber’s business, but both Corbett and she said Uber is not in violation of the city’s current taxi and limousine ordinance because Uber’s service is a “transportation network” and not a taxi service, Almoayed said.Īlmoayed said city officials had not yet talked with the seven taxi companies licensed to operate in Cedar Rapids about Uber’s arrival, and she said city officials are studying how required city fees for taxis, taxi drivers and inspections of taxis might apply to Uber’s vehicles and drivers. Background checks would also be required. The council is currently working on an ordinance that would require all Uber drivers to get chauffeur licenses, perform vehicle inspections and apply for certificates to operate that would require council approval. Since then, the Des Moines City Council has tried to regulate the service. San Francisco-based Uber arrived in Des Moines in September without prior approval from local officials. The Cedar Rapids launch comes only a few hours after Des Moines residents rallied to support the service against a proposal that would regulate Uber and other app-based rideshare services. Uber is offering a week of free rides, a tradition for new cities it enters. ![]() Thursday, the company said on its website.
